Professor Dolly Jørgensen was awarded two grants by the Norwegian Research Council (NFR) in June 2018 for Greenhouse environmental humanities projects.

Beaver display at Elvarheim museum

The first is a major research project “Beyond Dodos and Dinosaurs: Displaying Extinction and Recovery in Museums” worth 8.25 million kroner. The project examines the construction of narratives about extinction and adverted extinction in various museum settings. It will include a 3-year PhD position and a 2-year Post-doc who will both start in 2019.

The project includes cooperation with the Aust-Agder Museum and Archive for the development of a museum exhibit, “Beverens reise”, that traces the conservation of beaver in Norway and then reintroduction of the animal from Norway to Sweden. This has been one of the major subjects of Jørgensen’s research and research blog. The exhibit will open in 2021 to mark the 100th anniversary of the process of reintroducing beavers from Norway to Sweden.

The second is a networking project “In the Clouds” which will facilitate an artscience workshop on clouds in culture. The project asks: How does the modern computing cloud relate to longer human engagement with clouds as physical, technological and emotional objects? The workshop will bring together scholars from a wide variety of disciplines and contemporary artists to discuss this question. The output of the workshop will be a companion book for an upcoming exhibit on clouds at the Stavanger Art Museum. The Greenhouse is co-sponsoring the workshop by paying for artist stipends.

The official press release about the grant wins is available on the UiS news page.
