During the STREAMS conference at KTH Stockholm, 4-8 August 2020, our project is organizing a stream of events on location and technology. We are seeking additional contributions for the stream, in particular regular 15-20 minute paper presentations, though we are also open for suggestions for alternative sessions and creative interventions.
Here is our current stream description:
This STREAM aims to challenge environmental humanists to examine and rethink common assumptions about the relationship between technology and place. In most environmental writing, place plays a central role in enabling human relationships with nature. While there are exceptions, in most cases technology is seen as an intruder or an undesired filter between the human and the natural. Such assumptions are common — nature experienced through technology is seen as inauthentic nature. This stream aims to turn this assumption on its head by exploring how technology not only is a critical component of the human-place relationship, but also how technological tools, particularly as practiced within the digital humanities, can help us as environmental humanists, tell better and more nuanced stories about the environment.
